More than a museum, MART is a workshop for generating art and ideas: in
2002, MART opened to the public in a brand new site. Today MART boasts a new
museum dimension, with over twelve thousand square meters of spacious halls,
six thousand of which are dedicated to the art of the 20th and 21st
centuries and more than five thousand square meters to study and research
areas, education and visitor services.
The centrepiece of this grand opening is the architecture of Mario Botta,
one of the most important and prestigious names in contemporary
international architecture. The genius behind great museum projects such as
the Museum of Modern Art in San Francisco, the Museum Tinguely in Basel, and
the Friedrich Dürrenmatt Centre in Neuchâtel, Mario Botta, in association
with Giulio Andreolli, has designed a very special home for MART.
The
solemn, monumental building overlooks a large circular piazza, located at
the centre of the structure. The new building, incorporating the historic
City Library and the Auditorium planned for the city, fully and precisely
expresses the historic value of the site where it stands (18th-century
Rovereto with its magnificent building facades on Corso Bettini) and the
vast potential of the area.
The underground level plays host to the Archivio del '900 (Archive for
the 20th century) with the International Futurism Studies Centre and the
Library of Modern and Contemporary Art History. The first floor is dedicated
to temporary exhibition halls and the education centre, while the second
floor hosts the permanent collections.

ART AGAINST. Research in Russian art since 1950.
Works from the Sandretti collection of 20th-century Russian art
from 13th October 2007 to 20th January 2008
Curated by: Alexandra Obukhova
The ART AGAINST. Research in Russian art since 1950 exhibition is the result
of two years of study and cataloguing of the Collection, under the aegis of
the Muscovite scholar, Alexandra Obukhova. The exhibition presents a
selection of about 130 works, produced by artists who are not very
well-known to the general public; their work met with the ostracism of the
official culture of the time, which sought to suppress creative freedom, and
indeed, many of these artists led dramatic lives.
The word in art. Research and the avant-garde in the 20th century.
from 10th November 2007 to 6th April 2008
Written, drawn, declaimed, thought, cancelled, the word has played a
fundamental role in the experimentation of the historical avant-garde
movements, and its presence has accompanied every significant change in the
artistic poetics of the 20th century. From Futurism to Dadaism and
Surrealism to Fluxus and the contemporary scene, the relationship between
word and image has given life to the boldest expressive forms, making an
original innovative contribution both to painting and to the more
traditional forms of written, poetic, literary and artistic text. With
alternating fortune, now rare, now dominant, writing has appeared throughout
20th-century art, and even today the ambiguity of its relationship with the
image is as never before at the centre of interest for young artists.
"Deperopubblicitario". From auto-réclame to advertising architecture
from 13th October 2007 to 3rd February 2008
The exhibition will present works from public and private collections, but
will also provide the opportunity to highlight the material from the Depero
bequest, now on free loan to Mart.
