Trento

Welcome to Trent, a city with a great cultural and historical heritage.

A fascinating city, with a great cultural and historical heritage, whose economy is based on trade and tourism with its countless hotels and inns.

Trent According to several theories, Trento was founded as a Rhaetian settlement (the Rhaetians being a pre-Roman Italic people), at a time when the Valle dell'Adige - a natural North-South trade route - favoured cultural exchanges with the Veneti, Etruscan and Gallic people living in the Po Plain further South. Trento was conquered by the Romans in the 1st century BCE and became a strategic outpost during the various Roman military campaigns beyond the Alps. The city developed considerably during the Middle Ages, when it became the see of a Bishop and all the subsequent bishops did their utmost to ensure the safety and unity of the city. Over the centuries, the city was attacked by the Goths and the Franks, and in 982 it was taken over by the Othons and became a part of the Holy Germanic Roman Empire. The city acquired international fame in 1545, as the venue chosen to host the Council of Trento, which launched the Catholic Counter-Reformation. Trento's economy is based on tourism and trade. Trent we offer you a wide range of accomodation: hotels, campings, apartments, farmhouses and bed & breakfast for your unforgettable holidays in Italy.

WHAT TO SEE

Castello del Buonconsiglio

MART, the Contemporary Art Museum of Trento and Rovereto
Abbreviated as MART (Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto), the Trento section of which is housed in Palazzo delle Albere.
The permanent collection of the MART features works by the Secession and Mitteleuropean artists of the late 19th and early 20th centuries and a representative sample of the best Italian art of the 20th century. Of interest are also the works by post-World War II artists, from the abstract to the informal movements.

Galleria Civica d'Arte Contemporanea
The Municipal Contemporary Art Museum of Trento is an agile and precise instrument, within the broader context of the contemporary art exhibition galleries, as a qualified venue for experimentation and for developing the debate on cutting-edge art.

Museo Tridentino di Scienze Naturali
The Tridentine Museum of Natural Science is housed in the historic Palazzo Sardagna, the 21 rooms of which display the most characteristic themes of the landscape and scenery of Trentino.

Museo dell'Aeronautica Gianni Caproni

Museo Diocesano Tridentino
Trento's Diocesan Museum is housed in the Palazzo Pretorio, the former residence of the Prince Bishops of the city, and displays works of fine art (paintings and sculpture) and applied arts (wallpaper, gold works, Flemish tapestries), as well as artefacts related to the Council of Trent and the history of the city in general.

Spazio Archeologico Sotterraneo del Sas
A subterranean museum, where visitors can see the underground remains of the Roman "Tridentum" (Trento), buried underneath the Medieval and modern city. Besides the archaeological remains proper, there are also spaces for meetings, exhibitions, shows and events.

Palazzos and churches:

Palazzo Pretorio
Closely linked to the adjacent Castelletto and towered over by an imposing tower, the Torre Civica, Palazzo Pretorio is a perfect backdrop for the Piazza del Duomo - the Cathedral Square - together with the severe and massive structure of the Cathedral, dedicated to San Vigilio. Recent careful restoration work has restored the building to its original Romanesque appearance, having been built as a fortified residence in the 13th century but subsequently smothered under repeated additions and alterations, which had totally transformed it. Today it houses the prestigious Diocesan Museum of Trento, a must on all Council of Trento itineraries, together with the Cathedral and the Paleo-Christian basilica.

Palazzo delle Albere
A beautiful example of fortified Renaissance mansion (it was, in fact, built to the designs of a military architect), commissioned by the Prince Bishop Cristoforo Madruzzo (1539-1567); today it houses the Museo d'Arte Moderna e Contemporanea di Trento e Rovereto (MART). On the banks of the River Adige, it is an easy walk from the city centre and on their way there visitors can admire the suggestive church of S. Apollinare, also on the embankment.

Palazzo Geremia
One of the city's most important monuments, it features a double architectural structure: a Late Gothic interior concealed behind a full Renaissance facade on Via Belenzani. A clear example of transition from the Gothic to the Renaissance, combining the Lombard and Venetian styles. Erected between the end of the 15th and the beginning of the 16th century, today the building houses offices and is used for receptions, entertainment and other formal occasions by the city council, as well as cultural events.
Address Via Belenzani, 20, Trento. Tel. 0461 884453.

Palazzo del Municipio Vecchio The Old Town Hall features a Neoclassical façade, rebuilt in the 19th century, with an eagle, the heraldic insignia of the city of Trento. This was the seat of the Town Hall from 1481, when it was purchased by the local authorities, for four centuries, after which it was moved to Palazzo Thun.
