History
Man has been present in this region since the middle palaeolithic age and before. The first settlements began to appear in the 4th century a.C., when animal breeding and farming began to spread. At the time of the bronze age, primitive man of Sommolago began to live in lake dwellings constructed with piles, habitations which spread for a good six centuries. Referable tribal settlements from that period have been recovered in Val di Ledro (in Molino di Ledro,10 thousand piles have re emerged) and in Fiavè, a few kilometers beyond the lago di Tenno. A good part of the finds are exhibited at the Museo delle Palafitte, also equipped with a school classroom. With the passing of time, the navigability of Benaco (today known as Garda) favored commerce and therefore attracted those searching for a better life. At the end of the prehistoric era, this location became an area of exchange between the Celtics and the Romans (around 225a.C.), which initiated the process of romanization, testimony of tomb areas, foundation walls, and objects used in the home have been found spread throughout the area.
After 5 centuries, roman domination came to a conclusion leaving the Alto Lago (upper part of the lake) at the mercy of other invasions from the north. As of 568, the benacense (garda) coastal area and the Sarca flatlands were under the dominance of the Longobardi and then successively from dukes and counts pertaining to the carolingio reign. The local authorities were consolidated by receiving governing orders from the reigning emperor, by yielding vast areas of the territory to better guarantee the state confines, monitoring possession in the military structures, in the streets, and around the passes.
In the 11th century, Enrico II awarded temporary power to the vescovo (bishop) of Trento; the bishop's territory became solidified into a Principato, assigning direct power to the Imperatore del Sacro Romano Impero. Due to the acquisition of this power the Principato Vescovile di Trento was formed.
In Upper Garda the two centers took their shape, Riva and Arco, along with Nago and Tenno constituted the base system of control and defense for the entire territory. Riva, for it's trade growth, the importance of it's harbor, and it's political influence on the lombardo civilians, taking all of this into consideration it earned it's autonomy. All in all, at the end of the 12th century it was already referred to as the largest benacense (garda) harbor and the principle deposit area between Italy and Alemagna.
