Lavarone

The first description of Lavarone goes back to the 12th century. The relatively flat high lands dominate the landscape, which is enriched by a mattock lake and two beaches.
Lavarone vaunts a long tradition as holiday resort: it has been visited since the 19th century from no one else than the Habsburg and the Austrian royalties. Before and after World War I Sigmund Freud, the originator of modern psychoanalysis, stayed here too. Today, more than one monument commemorates the belligerent years, like the fortress Forte Gschwent Belvedere, a museum about the frontline on the high lands and the Austro-Hungarian military cemetery of Slaghenaufi. Lavarone is not a town in the very sense of the word, but a conglomeration of several little villages like Chiesa, Gionghi and Cappella. The Lavarone high land is a popular vacation destination both in winter and summer. The ski area offers 10 km of ski trails that are partly included in the Folgaria and Lavarone skipass. The cross country skiing centre of Millegrobbe is well known to there are the magic slopes where the international championships take place. The high land has a capacity of about 10'500 beds in 25 hotels, residences, campsites and rentable apartments.
