Segonzano Castle

The Segonzano Castle was constructed in medieval times by Rodolfo Scancio, with authorization from the prince bishop Federico Vanga. Succession of the castle passed on to Rottemburg, then Leichtenstein, to the prince bishop of Trento Bernardo Clesio, and finally to baron Giovanni Battista from Prato, which still today belongs to his descendents. The castle was ransacked and set on fire by Napoleon's french troops during the famous battle of Segonzano in 1796, and later almost totally demolished by the locals, who utilized the material for reconstruction of their homes after the devastating flood of 1882.
The majestic mural ruders of the castle are still standing even today guarding the natural passageway between the two banks. The roman tower, often referred to as the prison tower, stands in the neighboring landscape giving reminder to times gone by, especially those of good fortune in the 14th and 15th centuries. In 1494, during his trip from Venice, the painter Albrecht Dürer was very taken by the castle and decided to reproduce it in two of his watercolor paintings.
